Defective and blank tapes

Each conversion order is a custom job, the final number of tapes converted can be impacted by tapes that cannot be captured.  If we find that any of your tapes are blank, badly damaged, contain recordings of old TV shows, movies, or inappropriate material we will not capture the tape. We do scan tapes to make sure we do not miss any family orientated video. There is a $5.00 fee to cover our cost of reviewing tapes we do not capture. That fee will be deducted from the original cost of the tape and the remainder will be refunded to you.

We can repair broken or damaged video tapes

After years of storage and just normal wear and tear, video tapes can be twisted or broken, cases could be damaged, and in some cases, the tape is stuck in a camera or player.  In most cases, we can fix those issues.  A typical broken video tape repair will cost an additional $15.00.  If we need to remove a tape from a camera or player, that no longer works, the cost is $45.00.

Broken VHS Tape

PAL to NTSC conversion

You may have a video tape that was given to you by a friend or family member that lives in a foreign country and it’s not playable in the US. Most foreign countries use the PAL video standard while in the US the NTSC standard is used.  We can convert your PAL tapes to the NTSC standard for an additional charge of $45.00 per tape.  For Betamax and MicroMV tapes, we do not support the PAL format.

Need something more customized?

We can enhance your memories that are on video tape with optional editing extras such as special effects, music, captions, and a whole host of other possibilities.  Our specialists would be happy to discuss these options with you.

Why is it important to convert video tapes?

All video tapes formats were only made to last for approximately 20 years.  The longevity of a tapes life depends a great deal on how they were stored, whether they were subjected to heat, humidity, dirt and dust and normal wear and tear.  Your memories of your wedding, vacations, birthdays and your child’s first steps could be in jeopardy of being lost forever.

Basic information about VHS tape

The intended length of the tape can be determined by the number after the “T” in the model number.  For example, T-120 means that they can be recorded and played in the standard play mode for a maximum of 2 hours.  Most VHS tapes had the ability to be recorded and played in one of three modes.

VHS Modes

SP – Standard Play, 2-hour record, and playback with no quality loss.

LP – Long Play, 4-hour record, and playback with a decrease in quality.

EP – Extended Play, 6-hour record and playback with loss of video, audio, frame skipping, and Tracking issues.

The SP mode, the most popular option, will provide you with the very best quality conversion, meaning the best in video and audio.  Our Platinum Archival DVD will hold up to two hours of video that was recorded in the SP mode.  If the tape is longer than two hours an additional charge will be applied to your final invoice for the additional Platinum Archival DVD or Master Disc.
